Exceptional in autumn, the boreal forest covers more than half of Canada. It is one of the largest forest ecosystems on the planet, and home to thousands of wild species. Quebec’s boreal forest is a large coniferous shield covering 761,000 square kilometers, half the size of Quebec. Black spruce is the most widespread tree species, but jack pine, balsam fir, white spruce and tamarack are also found here, along with hardwoods such as maple, sugar maple and white birch, which give the forest its shimmering colors.
The varied fauna includes some 30 mammals such as beaver, red fox, coyote, wolf, mink, white-tailed deer, caribou, moose, black bear, muskrat, hare and deer mouse.
